A little over a year ago, many people talked about Apple’s diminutive Mac mini in the past tense: As of the beginning of March 2009, it had been 19 long months since the previous update to Apple’s most compact computer, and that update itself came after 11 months of waiting. Two updates in two and a half years? It was easy to believe that the Mac mini had become just as much of a “hobby” as the Apple TV . Those who’ve purchased an HDTV understand that when making such a purchase you don’t simply buy the TV. You have to upgrade your cable or satellite TV account for HD. And since you have this glorious picture, are you really going to settle for the weak stereo sound built into the TV or cough up the money necessary for a surround-sound receiver and speakers? And then there’s the hunk of furniture large enough to hold the thing. The iPad has a similar power to compel change. At last, the prophecy has been fulfilled: the second half of the coming of the iPad is upon us. I have in my hands (well, on my ottoman as I write this), an iPad Wi-Fi + 3G, which is Apple’s somewhat long-winded moniker for describing an iPad with cellular data access on AT&T’s network (here in the U.S. anyway).
